Polytheism in Ancient Egypt
Ancient Egyptian Religion constantly evolved over the centuries. Studies show that it existed for 3000 years, which caused the beliefs and deities to slowly change over time. It went from a religion filled with thousands of local deities, all possessing different powers and responsibilities, to a small number of deities worshipped by everyone. This comes to show, the people in Egypt were coming closer to a monotheistic belief. At first, Egyptians believed in no God or deity, but instead relied on magic and believed magical power was encapsulated in hieroglyphics of a sceptre(staff or rod). However, over the course of a few centuries, humans began to imagine Gods in human form with human characteristics. Archaeologists consider this stage to be “mythical”, meaning they are believing in things they have no answer for or basis on. It was at this stage that local communities had all types of Gods, in animal form and human form. Gods such as the ibis-god, cat-goddess, jackal-god or cobra-goddess. Most of their religion was based on their imagination up until this point. The last few centuries, they were closer to believing in one god, which was known as the Sun God Ra. Unfortunately, when the Greeks and Romans conquered Egypt, their pagan beliefs faded and the citizens believed in Monotheism.
